One of the best reasons to visit Umbria is that it’s a bit out of the way of the usual path of the major cities and tends to be a destination for the return traveler to Italy after seeing the major sights in other regions. For the determined, Assisi can be reached by train and bus from Florence and Siena but when I was studying in Siena in 2009, it was a 3-hour trip. Staying in Umbria a couple of nights is worth it the effort on a longer trip and worthy of an entire weeks vacation.

Flying
Great news for those of you who fly Star Alliance airlines. Starting in summer 2017 there is a connection to Perugia San Francesco d'Assisi (PEG)Â airport from Munich with Lufthansa. From other locations in Europe, your choices are Ryan Air and WizzAir. (Yes, I said WizzAir.)

Trains
If you happen to land in Rome, Foligno lies on the line from Rome to Ancona (Marche). This is your usual change to other destinations within Umbria. Here you are going to be on the smaller regional trains so packing light is a must for a quick transfer.
